This is a wonderful poker theory and strategy book that covers all of the fundamental topics you need to understand to be a long-term winning poker players. Mr. Sweeny does an excellent job writing in a voice and tone that is easy to follow. While he states the book is geared towards full ring games, its my personal opinion that it applies equally to 6-max cash games and that tourament poker players will gain valuable insight from it as well. I would highly recommend this book to my fellow poker players, beginners through experienced, micro stakes to mid stakes, online or live...honestly a gem of a poker book! The only downside to the book is that James tends to use acronyms without writing the wording beforehand - if your'e a regular poster in the major poker forums such as 2+2 this isn't a problem, but those that aren't used to certain acroynms might be lost.Product details

I started playing poker at a friends house a few years ago and got the bug. I read many books trying to get better. After reading Sklansky's Theory of Poker, this is THE book you should read next. It will save you time and money correctly learning actions and thought processes playing poker.
I only am 25% done with the book, but so far am very happy with it. Very well written, and enjoyable to read. I have no doubt that finishing this book before my next Vegas trip will help me greatly in crushing the 1-2 tables there!
After having to play live FR for the first time, I decided that this book would be a great start and I wasn't disappointed.
James goes into great detail about pre-flop play and adjustments to make with different oppents.
But the most helpful part for me was the detailed flopzilla analysis. James does an excellent job of showing you how to look at various ranges and how they hit
certain board textures which is something I haven't looked at before.
after reading this book a couple times and really digesting the basics I've decided to go back to dailyvariance and get the NL workbook, I'm expecting great things!
The book is well written it needs to be read a little at a time so that you can apply everything that you're learning I already made my money back from this book on the first day I played

James Sweeney has a very good ability to convey the written word to make his readers understand his message. This book has been out for a little while now, but with more people playing a mix of short handed games online, full ring online(what this book appears at first to be geared towards) and full ring live games, players need to understand the reasons they make their decisions during a hand. James is very good at explaining the "Why" part of poker, nit just "Do this here, but do that there" that many recent authors expel with their recent graphs of how they are better than anyone else. He also challenges you to branch out and find ways to exploit concepts that haven't been implemented yet by doing your homework and thinking about your game, all important concepts so that the successful players of today don't become the dinosaurs of tomorrow.
First off.. I don't generally believe anything I read in reviews. Many are assumably written by friends, family, or investors. However, this has been a great source of information. It has taken me three months to comprehend the first ten chapters, but that does not include putting the info into effective play... that will take an even greater amount of time. I have been playing 1/2nl for approximately 3 years and read several other books. This one has so far been the most beneficial.
It requires reading sections, taking notes, putting information into practice on the felt, then starting the process over again. It is slow and difficult but I am beginning to grasp the concept which is definitely leading to confidence within myself and respect from those around me.
I definitely recommend this book if you're willing put in the time and effort required to become a better player. Just know that it is going to require slowly applying the information page by page to your game, studying again and again.
